With roots immersed in the Southern California life-style of either going to the beach or to the desert the Sakal family’s weekends were spent surfing or riding dirt bikes which to this day are both equally Ryan’s passions. As the son of a respected Southern California surfboard builder Ryan’s path naturally led him more frequently to the coast than to the desert where he quickly gained notoriety in the water as a surfer and competitor. At an early age Ryan was being groomed by his father Ed Sakal not only in the water to become a professional surfer but also in the shaping room to become a shaper. While dad Ed was shaping his boards he would allow Ryan to give his input and even let him help in many of the steps of the shaping process. That time together in the shaping room with dad planted a seed of creativity that his father could clearly see. When given the chance to shape his own boards from start to finish at the age of fourteen Ryan was hooked and began shaping boards under the family label Sakal Surfboards in Huntington Beach CA and hasn’t stopped shaping since. Ryan’s surfing and shaping has equally propelled him on a path surf and shape boards around the world for many major label’s like Quiksilver, Billabong, Stussy, Town and Country , SUPERbrand and now is currently working and shaping closely with Chris Christenson in North County San Diego CA since 2014 while still surfing, shaping, and designing his own brand ARYSE Company. As of 2020 Ryan is returning to use the family name again calling his brand Ryan Sakal Surfboards.
